Taylor Democrats August Meeting w/ SOE Dana Southerland
Taylor County Democrats
Join the Taylor County Democrats for our August meeting in Perry, FL.
Our guest this month is Dana Southerland, Taylor County Supervisor of Elections. Mrs. Southerland has run elections in Taylor County since 2008, and she is joining us to walk through how the process actually works and to take questions. She serves every voter in the county, and this is a straightforward voter education session, not a political one.
She is bringing forms! If your address, name, signature, or party needs updating on your voter record, you can take care of it right there in the room. She will also have vote-by-mail request forms on hand for the November general election. Know someone who needs to register? Bring them with you!
If your signature has changed since you first registered, and for most of us it has, updating it is the easiest thing you can do to keep a mail ballot from getting flagged later. Worth ten minutes of your evening.
Topics we'll try to cover with Mrs. Southerland:
How a mail ballot is handled from request to count, including what happens when there is a problem with a signature
The cure process: what makes a ballot fixable, how you get notified, and what you have to do about it
Poll watchers, from her side of the desk: how designations are processed and what is expected of watchers at the polls
The canvassing board: who serves on it, when it meets, how the public can observe, and what logic and accuracy testing is
Closed primaries and universal primary contests, which trip up almost everybody
Early voting dates and hours, sample ballots, and keeping your registration record accurate
Also on the agenda
Brief updates from Taylor County Democrats
Time for attendees’ questions
Clear next steps for getting involved (even 1-2 hours/month)
Bring your questions. Beyond the election talk, we cover the priorities that matter locally - jobs, health care, disaster recovery, veterans, infrastructure, schools, and protecting our freedoms.
This is our last meeting before the August 18 primary, so come with questions. It is also a good event for first timers: come listen, ask questions, and meet local neighbors who want practical progress for Taylor County and the Big Bend.
